As a Recruitment Agency, we see a vast number of CV's every year. Every CV is and should be different, however there are definitely some tips that you can follow to make that great first impression and help your CV stand out from the competition:
Tailor It to the Job - Every role is unique, so make sure your CV highlights the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the position you're applying for.
Professional Summary - Kick off with a brief summary of your professional background and key achievements. This should give potential employers a quick snapshot of who you are and what you can bring to the role.
Highlight Achievements, Not Just Tasks - Instead of just listing your duties, focus on your accomplishments. Use numbers and data where possible. For example, "Increased lab efficiency by 20% within six months" sounds more impressive than "Responsible for lab tasks."
Keep It Clear and Concise - Aim for a CV that’s no longer than two pages. Use bullet points to make it easier to read and make sure you keep your formatting consistent.
Include Keywords - Some companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen CVs. Use relevant keywords from the job description to make sure you get past these filters.
Professional Look - Your CV should be easy on the eyes but still look professional. Stick to a clean font and avoid using too many colours or graphics.
Proofread - Typos and grammar mistakes can cost you the job. Proofread your CV multiple times, and maybe ask a friend or colleague to review it too.
Highlight Relevant Skills - Make sure to showcase skills that are relevant to the job. List technical skills, soft skills, and any certifications clearly.
Update Regularly - Keep your CV up to date, even if you’re not actively job hunting. This way, your latest accomplishments and skills are always included.
Seek Feedback - Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback from peers or mentors. They can provide valuable insights and help you polish your CV.
Remember, your CV is a reflection of your professional self and putting in the time to perfect it can really boost your opportunities.
